Introduction to RF Modem

Wireless RF Modem, also known as "RF Modem" and "wireless data transmission module", refers to a high-performance professional data transmission radio realized by means of DSP technology and radio technology.

The RF Modem is a wireless data transmission station that adopts digital signal processing, digital modulation and demodulation, forward error correction, equalization soft decision and other functions.


Function of RF Modem

As a communication medium, RF Modem has a certain scope of application like optical fiber, open wire and microwave. Its most basic function is to realize data transmission and transparent data transmission without changing the original communication program and connection mode. Specific indicators include transmission distance, transmitting and receiving frequencies, etc. The transmission distance of RF Modem ranges from hundreds of meters to tens of kilometers.


It provides real-time and reliable data transmission of monitoring signals in private networks under certain special conditions. It has the characteristics of low cost, convenient installation and maintenance, strong diffraction ability, flexible networking structure, and long coverage. Types of RF Modem

RF Modem are roughly divided into two types, one is traditional analog radios, and the other is digital radios using DSP technology. Traditional analog radios are generally converted to digital signals by adding a modem behind the RF part to transmit data.


Evolution of RF Modem

The application of RF Modem has developed from the earliest key code, telegraph, analog broadcast station and wireless modem to the present digital broadcast station, DSP and software station, and the transmission signal ranges from encoding and low-speed data (300-1200bps) to High-speed data (115200bps-1Mbps), can transmit remote control telemetry data, dynamic images and other services. At present, the world's well-known digital radio stations include the MDS RF Modem in the United States and the SATEL RF Modem in Finland.


Over the past two decades, with the rapid increase in the complexity and integration of integrated circuits, specialized processing chips that can perform digital signal processing (DSP technology) in real-time or "on-line" have been developed. All sites use digital processing technology and these sites are often referred to as digital sites.


With the wide application of DSP technology, the technology cost and core components have been reduced, so that its DSP technology has entered more product fields. Compared with traditional analog radio stations, the data signal processing algorithms of digital radio stations are very complex. Chips related to DSP can be used in real time and embedded in products, controlled by software. Without changing the hardware, you can change its performance and tasks within the system.


With digital signal processing technology and high-performance, low-cost digital signal processors, RF Modem using DSP technology have been popularized throughout the industry. In the near future, high-power, low-speed, low-precision analog radios will be retired from digital radios. The communications market includes traditional analog walkie-talkies and paging services.
