FAQ for GPS module

By sdga:NiceRF Wireless Technology Co., Ltd

Most of the GPS modules need to be configured and set when used. During the test, it will also be affected by factors such as external environment. Therefore, it is understandable to encounter problems. NiceRF lists some common problems and solutions as follows.Hope to help everyone.

FAQ for GPS module

1. What does the 20 channels of the GPS module mean?

The GPS module has a parameter of the number of channels. For example, 20 channels, it indicates that the module can establish a communication with 20 satellites at the same time. The 3 satellites are 2D positioning and the data is unstable. The module can only obtain correct positioning data after receiving more than 3 satellite signals at the same time and undergoing complex calculations. The more satellites the module communicates with at the same time, the faster and more accurate the module can obtain positioning data.  In general urban environments on the Earth's surface, it can usually communicate with 4 to 11 satellites simultaneously.

2. Why does the GPS module take a long time to obtain positioning data after booting?

The GPS module has two parameters: cold start and hot startup. If the GPS module is powered on for the first time, or or powered on after moving more than 1000 kilometers, the module should be re -calculated. It typically takes 1 to 5 minutes.  Then, the ephemeris data is stored inside the module and stored by the lithium battery inside the module.. This is called cold start. It takes a longer time.

If the next time it is turned on, because the lithium battery has saved effective star data, it can be quickly located, usually within 30 seconds, so it is called hot start.  If the module is powered off for more than 10 hours and the lithium battery is discharged, restarting the module is also equivalent to a cold start.

3. What should I do if cold start positioning is not possible for a long time?

Only in rare cases, the cold startup fails for more than 15 minutes. At this time, the GPS module is generally re -power off or checks whether the GPS is connected inversely.

4. Can't find satellite signals or signals slowly

① Don't worry about this situation,  change the location and try again.

The GPS module works by receiving satellite signals directly.

It may be that other objects block the signal .You can receive satellite signals outdoors in the open air.You can receive satellite signals outdoors in the open. Indoor,it may affect signal detection and reduce accuracy.

② Also check the antenna to see whether the antenna is in good contact and whether the environment is relatively open.

③ The operation of the GPS module is directly related to the number of satellites received and the strength of the signal.

Due to the satellite status is different every day, the signal may have errors.

④ If there is a high -power transmission in the system application, it will interfere with the receiving of the satellite signals.

⑤ The harmonic point of the wireless signal just on the frequency of GPS or BeiDou, will also interfere with the reception of the satellite signal.
