With the widespread use of wireless communication devices in the European market, CE RED certification has become a mandatory passport for module-based products to enter the EU. As a technology company focused on the development of LoRa modules, intercom modules, and FSK RF modules, we understand that every step, from design and testing to mass production, must strictly adhere to compliance requirements. This article will analyze the core requirements of CE RED certification and key testing points for modules, helping manufacturers achieve stable product deployment and sustainable exports.
The EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED, 2014/53/EU) applies to all devices that transmit and receive radio waves via electromagnetic means. For transmission modules, CE certification primarily verifies the following aspects under the EU legal framework:
RF performance safety
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
Electrical safety (requirements under the LVD directive)
Effective use of spectrum resources
This is particularly important for products such as LoRa, FSK, and intercom modules offered by NiceRF, which typically operate in frequency bands like 433 MHz, 868 MHz, or 2.4 GHz, and are subject to key standards like ETSI EN 300 220, EN 300 328, and EN 301 489.
Mandatory RF Parameters Boundaries
According to Appendix III of the RED Directive, modules must meet the following RF compliance criteria:
Parameter Types | Requirement Description |
Frequency Range | Restricted to EU open frequency bands, such as 868.0-868.6 MHz (LoRa), 2400-2483.5 MHz (2.4G), etc. |
Transmit Power | EIRP limits vary across different frequency bands, such as a maximum of 20 dBm for the 2.4 GHz band and 25 mW (+14 dBm) for the 868 MHz band. |
Occupied Bandwidth & Out-of-Band Emissions | Must comply with ETSI standards (e.g., EN 300 328/220) to prevent spectrum pollution. |
Spurious Emissions | Must not exceed -36 dBm (below 1 GHz) or -30 dBm (above 1 GHz). |
Receiver Sensitivity | LoRa modules should achieve ≤ -137 dBm (at a specific BER) to ensure link performance. |

1.Test Items and Corresponding Standards
Test Items | Applicable Standards | Required Core Instruments
Transmit Power | EN 300 328/220 | Power Meter, Microwave Anechoic Chamber
Spurious Emissions | EN 301 893/489 | EMI Receiver, Antenna Test System
Receiver Sensitivity | EN 300 330 | Vector Signal Generator, Bit Error Rate Analyzer
Frequency Tolerance | EN 300 220 | Spectrum Analyzer (e.g., R&S FSW) |
2.Environmental and Error Control
Temperature Range Control: The module should maintain stable RF performance between -10°C and +55°C (industrial grade extended to -40°C to +85°C).
Power Supply Disturbance Response: When power supply fluctuations are ±15%, the power drift should be less than ±1.5 dB.
Multipath Interference Testing: Use an anechoic chamber to simulate complex scenarios and test the module's interference resistance.
To improve the chances of passing CE RED certification, it is recommended that companies make the following preparations before submitting for testing:
Basic RF Pre-testing
Use equipment such as spectrum analyzers to conduct preliminary testing on the module, focusing on parameters like transmit power, spectral width, and spurious emissions. This helps identify potential non-compliance issues in advance.
PCB Design and Antenna Optimization
Ensure that the RF path is properly grounded and the antenna is well-matched (SWR ≤ 2.0). If necessary, incorporate filters and shielding designs to reduce out-of-band emissions and interference risks.
Firmware Configuration Check
Fix the frequency and transmit power parameters to ensure that LBT/CCA is enabled by default (if applicable). Avoid issues such as operating in unauthorized frequency bands, abnormal power levels, or frequency shifts.
Technical Documentation Completeness
Prepare technical documents in advance, including module specifications, circuit diagrams, firmware descriptions, antenna data, and user integration guides. These will provide strong support for the subsequent certification process.
By making these preparations, not only can you improve certification efficiency and reduce the risk of rework, but also lay a solid compliance foundation for product iterations and mass exports.
Certification is Not the End, But the Beginning of Globalization
For NiceRF's focus on LoRa, FSK, and intercom modules, CE RED certification is not only the gateway to the European market but also the foundation for building brand barriers and achieving reliable mass production. We will continue to deepen our efforts in four key areas, hardware RF optimization, firmware protocol compliance, testing platform enhancement, and complete certification documentation, helping our customers quickly and safely establish a presence in the global market.
