Is the higher the sensitivity of the LoRa module the better?

By sdga:NiceRF Wireless Technology Co., Ltd

Is the higher the sensitivity of the LoRa module, the better? Before answering this question, NiceRF briefly introduces what sensitivity is. Receiving sensitivity is a very important parameter in the LoRa module. The sensitivity is in negative units. The smaller the negative value, the higher the receiving sensitivity. Sensitivity is a function that is effective when the LoRa module receives data, so sensitivity is generally called receiving sensitivity.

There is a very vivid analogy: the sensitivity is similar to our hearing. The more sensitive our hearing, the farther or smaller sounds can be heard. In the wireless field, the longer the transmission distance, the weaker the signal, and the receiving sensitivity is the same as our hearing. The higher the sensitivity, the weaker the signal can be received, so in the wireless field, the higher the sensitivity, the longer the distance.

Is the higher the sensitivity of the LoRa module the better?

In the previous article, NiceRF has published many parameter-related articles, such as power, speed, etc. It will often be mentioned in the article that the higher the value of a certain parameter, the better? NiceRF's answer is the best for the project, not the higher the better. But as far as the sensitivity parameter is concerned, no matter what project it is in, or what external factors such as working environment, the higher the sensitivity value, the better. Because the higher the sensitivity, the longer the transmission distance will be, and the more stable the transmission path will be.

Unlike other parameters, sensitivity needs to be considered whether it matches the needs of the project, such as how much power wireless module my project needs and how far it can transmit. The above parameters can be changed multiple times, but the sensitivity is different. The value of the sensitivity is determined inside the chip and cannot be changed. For example, the LoRa module LoRa1268 and LoRa1268F30 developed by NiceRF based on the SX1268 chip are somewhat different in other parameters, except that the receiving sensitivity is -148dBm. So if we choose a LoRa module, we should give priority to the LoRa module with high sensitivity (because the sensitivity cannot be modified).

Knowledge about the sensitivity of LoRa module

Sensitivity is a very special parameter. Although we cannot modify its value, it is not a fixed value. When we modify the transmission rate of the LoRa module, the value of the sensitivity will fluctuate accordingly. The higher the rate, the worse the sensitivity; the lower the rate, the higher the sensitivity. In short, at different rates, the sensitivity values are different.

Regarding the question of whether the higher the sensitivity of the LoRa module, the better, I believe you already have the answer in your mind. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact NiceRF.
