The UWB650 module, launched by NiceRF, is a wireless communication module based on UWB technology. This module integrates data communication, dual-side bi-directional distance measurement (DS-TWR), and three-point planar positioning functions.
This outdoor field test aimed to assess the 1-to-many distance measurement performance of the UWB650 module. The main objectives of the test were twofold: first, to evaluate the maximum distance the UWB650 module can measure, and second, to test the module’s stability and data consistency.
Test Preparation
Test Tools: One laptop, three UWB650 modules, two 4.2V dry batteries, and one TTL interface board.
Test Location: Xin'an West Road, Bao'an District. This location was chosen to test the distance performance under certain pedestrian interference conditions.
Testing Method
1. First, connect one UWB650 module to the laptop via the TTL interface board.
(Note: Ensure that the antenna chip faces towards the side of the testing module)
location. Once they reach the target location, distance measurement begins. The wireless module's blue light will turn on when it is receiving, and the red light will turn on when transmitting. If the blue light does not turn on at the designated spot, it means the module is out of the effective communication range, and the distance between the modules will be adjusted accordingly. When the blue light turns on, the modules are within effective communication range, and the distance between them will be increased to determine the maximum measurable distance.
On the computer, the test distance and its stability can be directly observed through the software, as shown in the figure below.
Test Results
The results of this test are as follows:
1. The UWB650 module achieved a stable maximum distance of approximately 560 meters in a 1-to-2 measurement setup.
2. In areas with significant pedestrian traffic and interference, occasional disconnections were observed. However, within 200 meters, the presence of pedestrian traffic had minimal impact on the communication.
UWB650 distance measurement method used is Double-Sided Two-Way Ranging (DS-TWR), which is an advanced version of the traditional Single-Sided Two-Way Ranging.
In Double-Sided Two-Way Ranging, multiple signal round trips are used to eliminate errors caused by clock offset or drift. This significantly improves the accuracy of the distance measurement, often reaching centimeter-level precision. This method is particularly suitable for high-precision applications such as industrial automation and other scenarios requiring high accuracy.
