First, the frequency band. LoRa operates in unlicensed bands below 1 GHz and does not require additional charges for applications. NB-IoT and cellular communications use licensed bands below 1 GHz and are subject to charge. The frequency band between 500 MHz and 1 GHz is the best choice for long-distance communication because the actual size and efficiency of the antenna is quite advantageous.


Second, battery life. The LoRa module has unique features in handling interference, network overlap, scalability, etc., but does not provide the same quality of service as cellular protocols. NB-IoT does not provide the same battery life as LoRa for quality of service considerations. If you need to ensure the application scenario, it is recommended to use NB-IoT, and low cost and a large number of connections are preferred, then LoRa is a good choice.


There are two important factors to consider regarding battery life, the current consumption of the node and the protocol content. LoRa is an asynchronous ALOHA-based protocol, which means that nodes can sleep for a long or short time depending on the specific application scenarios. Nodes such as cellular synchronization protocols must be networked periodically, which consumes extra battery power. .


So for applications that require frequent communication, short latency, or large amounts of data, NB-IoT may be a better choice for scenarios that require lower cost, higher battery life, and less frequent communication. Say LoRa is better.


Third, equipment costs. For the terminal node, the LoRa protocol is simpler than NB-IoT, easier to develop and more suitable for microprocessor compatibility and compatibility. At the same time, low-cost, relatively mature technology LoRa modules can be found in the market, and there will be upgraded versions.


The market price of LoRa wireless transceiver module is reasonable, about 7-10 US dollars. LoRa can be carried out using traditional signal towers, industrial base stations and even portable home gateways. Building base stations and home gateways is cheap. But for NB-IoT, the price of upgrading existing 4G LTE base stations is conservatively estimated to be no less than $15,000 each.


Fourth, network coverage and deployment schedules. The NB-IoT standard was announced in 2016. In addition to network deployment, the corresponding commercialization and establishment of the industry chain will take longer and effort to explore. LoRa's entire industry chain is relatively mature, and its products are in a state of “ready to go”. At the same time, many countries around the world are or have completed nationwide network deployment. When the NB-iot industry chain is subject to restrictions by frequency bands and operators.
